See Your Doctor Before Herniated Disc Becomes Worse

Share post:

A herniated disc can be a serious condition that needs to be treated before it worsens. It is caused when the soft outer tissue of a spinal disk pushes through a tear in the tough outer covering or annulus fibrosus.

This causes pressure on the underlying nerves and leads to possible numbness, muscle weakness, and pain in different areas of your body. You may need surgery if you have symptoms for more than 3 months or they worsen over time.

There are many treatments available such as physical therapy and medications that may help alleviate some of your symptoms without surgery which could lead to complications like permanent nerve damage.

What is a herniated disc?

A hernia de disco is a common injury caused by the pressure on your spinal column. The discs act as cushioning between your vertebrae, but if they are damaged or weakened, there is too much pressure, and they may burst. The most common cause of this type of injury is lifting heavy objects incorrectly, but it can also happen after an accident or just from aging. Fortunately, you can still take steps to reduce the pain associated with a  disc and prevent future damage by getting treatment now.

The term herniated disc is used to describe a tear in the tough outer layer of an intervertebral disc. This tear can allow the internal material, or nucleus pulposus, to leak and press against nearby nerves and spinal cord.

The first symptom of a herniation may be pain that radiates down one leg from the back into the groin area. Other symptoms include weakness, numbness, or tingling in either leg. If you have these symptoms, it is important to see your doctor as soon as possible.

Signs and symptoms of a herniated disc

If these disks become damaged or herniated, it can cause pain in the neck or lower back region, loss of feeling in arms or legs, and even paralysis if left untreated.

  • Symptoms to look out for are tingling sensation down your arm(s), leg(s), or both;
  • pain when you turn your head from side to side;
  • stiffness in your neck after sleeping with it turned one way too long;
  • nausea/vomiting due to pinched nerves etc.

Causes of a herniated disc

It can be caused by several different reasons. There are many things that you might not even know about that could lead to the development of this condition. For example, did you know that if your child or pet is jumping on someone’s back, they have a higher risk of developing a herniated disc?

Treatment for a herniated disc

Herniated discs are a common problem among individuals who have been active in their lives. Whether it is from playing sports, lifting weights, or just the everyday activities that most people do on an average day, herniated discs can be extremely painful for many of us.

There are many different procedures used to treat this condition, and one of the best ways to find out which procedure might work best for you is to consult with your doctor about what would be best suited for your specific case. The treatment will depend on where the actual herniated disc has occurred and how severe it may be since there are varying degrees of severity when it comes to these types of issues.

 Prevention of recurrence of the condition

The reason why we do not need to worry about having a herniated disc is that the human body has an excellent recuperative capacity. The treatment for a herniated disc is very simple and effective: rest, ice, and heat therapy. However, if you have already had one episode of back pain or sciatica, then you might be worried that it will happen again.
