Basic Types of Galvanized Iron
There are four main types of galvanized iron and each one is designed to be used in a specific application. The most common is hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) which makes up about 80% of all galvanized iron on the market. It’s been treated with molten zinc at between 800–1000 degrees Fahrenheit, a process that can help prevent corrosion, but leaves it susceptible to rusting if it’s scratched or exposed to acidic materials.
Spray- or cold- dipped galvanized (CDG) takes just 5–15 minutes and uses roughly 10 times less zinc than HDG; however, it can’t prevent weathering as well as HDG because there aren’t any solid protective layers built up on its surface.
Hot Dipped Mild Steel Sheet & Strip
Mild steel hot dipped galvanized sheets are manufactured by dipping them in molten zinc and then painting them with a hot zinc coating. This process results in maximum protection against corrosion on mild steel.
These hot-dipped galvanized mild steel sheets come as thick plates, coils, and strips in various sizes, widths, and lengths. Hot dipped galvanized is ideal for exposed outdoor applications where there will be continuous exposure to corrosive elements such as salt air, air pollution, industrial pollutants, and heavy road dust.
This type of sheet has good resistance against atmospheric conditions of coastal areas such as spray from sea water in coastal areas or industrial pollutants due to nearby factories. They have a low requirement for maintenance after installation but do need regular painting at about 6 months intervals depending on usage.

Coil Packing and Transportation
Most companies provide coil packing with their galvanized iron sheets. When ordering, you’ll need to know how long it is and which direction it was rolled. Make sure there are no dents or bends in your metal before you unpack it.
